How do I join?
There is the proverb 'to be one ask one'! Any member of Thamesmead lodge will answer any questions you may have, and if you are interested will arrange a more formal interview by its members. You are welcome to attend any 'white table' events the lodge may be holding, also any masonic festivals open to the public. Our contact page will put you in touch with our members and enable us to answer any questions you may have.
Who can join Thamesmead lodge?
Working men over the age of 18 who are of good reputation and have a belief in a supreme being can be made masons irrespective of social-economic standing, faith, sexuality, race or employment role. Candidates must be able to support their personal needs and family financially. Freemasonry is not incompatible with any civil, moral or religious duties.
What will Freemasonry do for me?
Freemasonry means different things to different brothers. For most it is a social event – enjoying an evening out with like-minded persons, meeting new friends and doing a good turn for charity. There are brothers who enjoy the historical side and origins of masonry, for others it becomes their primary hobby and join many of the side orders. Freemasonry is one of those interests where it is up to the individual member to partake in as much good work to suit himself and his circumstances. Most freemasons make lifelong friends after they have joined the craft.
I am/was a member of another lodge. Can I join or attend as a guest?
Thamesmead Lodge is known in the Province of West Kent for being a small but very friendly and accommodating group of brethren and any regularly initiated, passed and raised brother in good standing with the lodges of which he is or was a member is welcome to join the lodge or attend our meetings. We also welcome joining members and guests from lodges overseas whose Grand Lodge is recognised as regular by UGLE.
Should I speak to anyone about joining?
It is sensible to speak to your wife, partner or family as Freemasonry requires a modest level of personal, social and financial commitment from its members. Our subscription is £285 annually for full membership (including meals) and we meet 4 times a year with at least one social event for wives, partners, families and friends to attend. If your family are supportive of you joining, your experiences with Thamesmead Lodge (and freemasonry in general) will be enhanced. We are more than happy to answer any questions your relatives may have.
Can women join?
We recommend any women with an interest in Freemasonry contact the two popular and very successful Grand Lodges exclusively for female Freemasons - The Order for Women Freemasons; and HFAF – Freemasonry for Women. These orders perform the same ceremonies and wear the same regalia as their all-male counterparts but are exclusively for women, and while not affiliated, both have a very good working relationship with UGLE.
How do I progress in Freemasonry?
When your application is processed and agreed, you will be initiated as an 'Entered Apprentice'. With regular attendance you will pass to the degree of a 'Fellowcraft' and then raised as a 'Master Mason' – the third and highest degree. You will also progress through the working offices of the lodge until after several years, following regular attendance and commitment you will be installed as Master of the Lodge.
